Saving Lives, One Heart at a Time
2023 Annual Report
Dear Friends,
I am delighted to present to you the 2023 Annual Report for AugustHeart. This report represents the significant contributions, growth, accomplishments and stories from this past year. Each year we are driven by one goal- advancing our mission to screen teens in an effort to reduce the risk of sudden cardiac death.
I am proud to report that in 2023, we broke a record by screening over 10,000 teens in one calendar year. A testament to the hard work and dedication of our staff, doctors, technicians, volunteers, and the support we receive from the community.
Amidst these numbers are stories of two families who were impacted by AugustHeart. These stories underscore the transformative power of our work and the difference it makes in the lives of those we serve.
None of our achievements would be possible without the unwavering support of our Board of Directors, donors, partners, volunteers, and the broader community. As we reflect on the accomplishments of the past year, we also look forward to the opportunities and challenges that the future holds.Your trust and commitment have been instrumental in propelling us forward.
Thank you for being a part of August’s amazing legacy, and I extend my heartfelt thanks to you for being an integral part of our story. With your continued support, we are confident in our ability to expand our reach, deepen our impact, and create positive change in the coming year. Together, we are saving lives and making a difference!
Gratefully,
Cathy Klumpp

10,000 Screenings
To say that 2023 was a great year would be a gross understatement. 2023 was a showstopper for AugustHeart.
In August of this year, we screened our 10,000th student- a milestone never before reached in the history of the organization. There was celebration in that moment, complete with confetti, noisemakers, and lots of cheers. In addition to the record number of students screened in 2023 (10,368), AugustHeart screened at a record number of events (57) and added 7 new schools/events.
Sometimes it’s tempting to focus solely on the numbers. They speak volumes. But for every number, there is a person who made it happen- a student, a technician, a doctor, a volunteer, and a donor. It is the community created when these individuals give of themselves to make the work of AugustHeart possible. It is thanks to this community that any of the successes of 2023 have been possible. I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to work with this team and to call myself part of this community.
Alex Sego, Program Director
Cardiology is a passion of mine, and AugustHeart is my healthy obsession. I was approached at work asking to help perform EKGs on students on a Saturday morning. I had never heard of this organization, so I was enlightened and of course agreed. That was 10 years ago! This cause has grown from screening a few Saturdays to now 5 days a week for a few months. Every student that I hook up, every EKG performed, I wonder, “Is this the one? The one we save, the family we are keeping whole with this simple life saving procedure”. EVERY STUDENT. EVERY TIME.
When I called my “next in line” this past summer and learned it was the 10,000th student that we screened, I was beyond ecstatic! My immediate thought was how exciting that on my 10th year with this organization, I screened the 10,000th student of 2023. I have reflected on how the number of screenings every year and the geographic area we cover has surpassed the previous year, which only means more lives positively impacted. AugustHeart had rang the doorbell when starting this organization, now the door is wide open to reverse the numbers of premature deaths that are detectable through our screenings.
We cannot be satisfied with 10,000 for 2024. The race is on, more cities, more schools, more screenings, more lives saved! We were blessed with knowledge, skills, and resources to make a difference. Let’s do this! #AUGUSTHEARTSTRONG

FOUNDED IN MEMORY OF Augustus C. Koontz
In October of 2008, August Koontz, an active young athlete from San Antonio, died in his sleep at the age of 18. August’s death was the result of sudden cardiac arrest, brought about by a genetic heart condition called hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) which causes a thickening of the heart wall and can lead to obstruction of blood flow and an erratic heartbeat.
After the loss of their son August, Doré and Bart Koontz struggled to make sense of his death. Like most parents, they had never heard of HCM and were shocked to learn that August had it. The most devastating realization for the Koontz family was knowing that August would still be alive today had he undergone a simple 20-minute heart screening.
In May 2011 Doré and Bart launched AugustHeart, a 501(c)(3) dedicated to providing free heart screenings to local teenagers. Since that time, AugustHeart has successfully implemented a community-wide effort involving a team of volunteers. These include board certified cardiologists, sonographers, technicians and area high school athletic programs through partnerships with Baptist Health System, Christus Santa Rosa Health System, Methodist Healthcare System, University Health System and UT Medicine San Antonio. Joined by the professional expertise and dedication of our partners, AugustHeart is committed to the prevention of tragic and unnecessary teen deaths caused by undiagnosed heart conditions.
