Augie attended San Antonio Academy for 11 years, from pre-kindergarten through the eighth grade.  He developed a lifetime of friendships with his fellow classmates. August really blossomed in the 7th and 8th grade at the Academy. Under the guidance of Coach Heineman, Augie competed on the basketball team which boosted his self-confidence and matured him as a young man. His participation created a special bond between him and his teammates, as well.

Augustus Cummings Koontz was born March 29, 1990.  His life personified the joy he brought to each day and to every person’s life he encountered.  He had great compassion for others, evidenced by his desire to really get to know people. He was a great listener and was a young man with a ‘heart’ for others. This love for others was the measure of his greatness and will be his legacy.

As a young boy, August attended Laurel Heights United Methodist Church Weekday School. August loved to play, to paint and draw, and especially liked to dress up like his favorite superhero.

August attended Proctor Academy in Andover, New Hampshire for high school; completing his freshmen and sophomore year there. In 2006, August played football in the New England Championship Game representing the Evergreen League in the NEPSAC Championship Bowl. The Hornets were declared Co-Champions after playing to a tie in the Bowl against Noble and Greenough School. The 2006 Season represented the first undefeated season for Proctor since 1958. Playing football at Proctor taught August the importance of perseverance, commitment, selflessness and self-confidence.

August returned home to San Antonio to finish out high school. He attended Central Catholic High School, a college preparatory school in San Antonio, Texas, that focuses on educating young men from diverse backgrounds and developing them through leadership and moral character. He continued his love of sports by playing football for Central Catholic’s BIG BLUE team.  August was a talented artist and continued to draw and paint at Central. He was also verbally gifted; a good communicator and creative writer. August died in October of his senior year.

Apart from school and sports, August enjoyed the outdoors and was an avid hunter. He spent nine summers at Camp Stewart, a Christian- oriented camp for boys, located in the Texas Hill Country.  August’s life paralleled the Camp Stewart motto “Don’t wait to be a Man to be Great, Be a Great Boy”.  August bonded with his father on their hunting safaris and was an incredible shot. Among his most memorable hunting expeditions was bird hunting in Córdoba, Argentina and big game hunting in Zambia, Africa.

August cared deeply about people. He often donated his time to worthy causes like Family Services Association of San Antonio’s Adopt-a-Family Program. Each year he would help purchase, wrap and deliver gifts to underprivileged children and their families during the holidays. August loved his family and friends. He was a protective and adoring big brother to Shell and Conoly. He was an amazing friend to all and will be forever missed. He lived a full life with a big heart and his memory will carry on beyond his years because of AugustHeart.
